Types of Vegetable Seeds - Their Benefits and Differences

When you are planting a vegetable crop, the primary question that arises is the type of seed that should be used. Every Gardener wants a cycle of the crop which starts by planting the seeds in the field or garden to get the best and healthy yield and then production of the seeds for future plantation. Whether or not this target can be achieved depends on the type of seed that is being used. There are three types of seeds that are produced by the plant breeding services
  • ·         Open pollinated seeds
  • ·         Hybrid seeds
  • ·         Genetically Modified Organism seeds or GMO seeds

Open pollinated seeds

These are the seeds that are produced as the result of natural pollination by birds, insects, wind etc. The plant breeder producing Open pollinated seeds is careful to keep the seeds safe from chemicals.  These are the seeds that are used by the farmer since the origin of farming. The seeds used have naturally occurring traits like the good flavour or drought tolerance. All the heirloom seeds are open pollinated that are preserved and maintained from the best of their lots, spanning generations of yields.
