What Is the Significance and Use of Plant Breeding Of Minor Crops?

To fulfil the increasing demands of the global nutrition, a high level of expertise is needed to enhance the resistance power towards pests and plant diseases and boost their yield. Breeding of plant is one of those ways that help in accomplishing this objective.

What are minor crops and how do they different from major ones?
Knowledge about the plant genetic diversity all over the world tells us about different new species of plants that have been cultivated. These crops that are grown at the local level are characterized as minor crops. It is different from major ones on the basis of the level of knowledge and the size of arable land.

Characteristics of minor crops
Minor crops are indigenous species, in which much of the production is accumulated from the wild. Plant breeding has proved to be a great way to assist in the cultivation of these species and to build their quality characteristics. This makes them highly appreciated in the market.

Plant breeding services help in collecting the endangered species, enhancing their benefits and helping in saving plant population.

New Plant Varieties – How Can You License and Protect Yours?

Gardening enthusiasts and plant breeders love working on new plant varieties which are better, stronger, more adaptable, producing superior crops or simply being more beautiful or different in some way. It is not enough, however, to have a single plant specimen to exhibit new features. You need to accomplish more before you think of protecting and licensing a new plant variety.

Plant protection is granted when certain criteria are met: the variety must be new, uniform and distinct. Also, it must present itself as stable (does not change with new generations or new plants; the traits stay the same over time). In addition, there are several formalities to comply with. Another important criterion is connected to plant distribution. In the end, one must also choose the denomination for the new variety and it must be a suitable one.

If the technical criteria mentioned above is unclear or is not met as expected, then the gardener may opt for professional breeder services. An expert horticulturist can help them develop the new variety in accordance with their plan: the features or improvements they want to see in the new plant. The horticulturist can apply the breeding methods correctly and also control the environment in order to help the plants become stable.

The authority concerned with new plant variety protection is the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants. Check the UPOV website for more information. This can get you the Plant Breeder's Right or the PRB. Thus, your variety is protected and it can't be exploited unless you give your consent. Unless you have obtained this, you cannot market and sell your plants as a new variety. Once you have, however, it will help you get the recognition you deserve and promote your creation as desired, with the prospects of great success. After all, it's the new plant varieties that are sought after to improve gardens and to make agriculture provide more.

The application system is the same for all the countries that are UPOV members. Note that a newly made variety has to be inspected by a UPOV member beforehand.

Plant Breeding - New Technique Which Offers Many Benefits To Your Farm

Plants help world and environment in various ways. They provide oxygen and food that are two essential things for human survival. The maintenance and breeding of plants depend on various factors. The process of adapting the different genetic properties of different plants for the benefits of mankind is called plant breeding.

In this article we will discuss the advantage of plant breeding.
• New Varieties of Quality Crops: With the help of breeding method, people can pro-duce crops with better quantity. This method is very comfortable option for many farmers to achieve superior quality. This method allows production of plants within short period.

• Eliminate Disease: The ability to eliminate plant and animal diseases is considered as one of the biggest advantages of plant breeding. Pre-screening and identification of particular diseases allow farmers to keep them under control. With such methods, genetic diseases will soon be eliminated among animals and plants.

• Influence the productivity: It has great potential to influence the productivity of food in a positive way. It helps in improvement of grains quality and increases pro-tein quotient in crops. Plant breeding also opens up the window to grow plants on such lands which were earlier not suitable for farming.

• Sustainable food chain: It has been predicted that world population will hit the mark of 10 billion by the year 2050. It is important for government officials to plan for food chain system to allow production of sufficient amount of food source every year. This method will help to feed people more effectively and slowly eliminate hunger.

• No Safety Concerns: If you compare plant breeding with genetically modified crops, you will understand the benefit of the natural evolution of crops. DNA sequences do not get tempered to make changes like genetic modification.

The main objective of plant breeding is to develop plants for the better adaptability to hu-man needs. In last 20-30 years, there had been a tremendous increase in the production of agricultural crops with the help of multiple breeder services available to farmers. Innova-tive and well-researched ideas lead to higher yielding crops with better agricultural traits like stress tolerance and disease tolerance.

Three Steps to Become an Independent Plant Breeder

Do you keep a close vigil over your garden and stay alert with every change that is reflected in your garden? Then you will definitely be aware when your plant shows some variation in its growth pattern in contrast to the regular style. For example, your plant can look shorter, the flowers can be of a different shape or color, the fragrance could be different, the blooming pattern could change etc. Rather than looking astounded, you can turn into an independent plant breeder and contact any nearby breeder services for further help. Having found the unique plant, you can follow these three steps to replicate the unique plant for additional breeding work. How? Here are the steps:

Collect the cuttings
This breeding method is known as selection which relies on close observation. You have to keep checking the new variety and let it grow and seed naturally. You can collect the seedlings replant them to reconfirm the new breed of plant. Once you have confirmed, it is a new breed altogether, you can send it to accredited breeding centers for evaluation.

Assess your cuttings
Breeding centers will assess your cuttings if you have chosen to breed in the vegetative method. You need to send a proper cutting, not close to root or shoot for correct assessment. Also if you are sending with the root, you should cover the root with a damp tissue so that plant does not dry out. Wrap them neatly and puncture holes in the plastic bag for aeration while sending the plant for assessment.

Patenting and plant development
If the breeding agency finds your species to be a good variety that is rich and also fertile, they will notify you accordingly and you can patent the plant breed on your name. This will make you an independent breeder and you can continue to stick to your garden or explore further by associating yourself to a nursery that specializes in breeding.

So, these were the three basic steps that if followed with dedication and perfection, can turn you into an expert plant breeder by inventing new breeds. As a result, you will get high satisfaction and acknowledgement as well. For more advices and suggestions you can approach a good horticultural centre. The experts will give you all the necessary training and tips to become successful as a plant breeder.

Some basic works that a plant breeder does

Not always the soil conditions, climatic conditions and other resources that are required for a plant variety to grow effectively and as desired are correct. Hence some corrections are required to be made to either of the factors that affect the growth and desired results are obtained. This brings into picture the breeder services.

What do the breeders do exactly?

The first step as a breeder a person needs to take is to analyse the present situation of the soil, climate and the crops to know the current scenario and then make an projection or aim of how much scope of improvement can be expected. As to how well the crops can be grown.

Next is in depth analysis of the issues that are found. Like say for example if the soil is found deficient of some minerals or required natural ingredients that are must for the growth, then finding about what and how much is deficient. Analysing the crops to see where all is the scope of improvement, like if the crop is not growing enough or is not as healthy as required. In short a complete analysis of the situation.

Then based on the analysis the breeder would decide and try out trials in glass house or any place to see if the solutions that needs to be implemented works for the crops or not. If it works then the same can be applicable to the entire space or else again the analysis comes into picture.

Apart from just trial and error methods it is also one of the key responsibilities of a breeder to keep in touch with the technologies and techniques that are developing across the globe. This will be of immense help as if some other breeder has applied a technique for a similar situation that a breeder is working at present that he or she can apply it without wasting time to perform trials. So this again saves time and cost.

Another important work that every breeder does is to maintain a detailed step by step record and note of all the work done and the results obtained. Keeping a technical record will help the breeder to rectify any step in between if the trial is not successful and if the trail is successful a detail transcript can help many other breeders across the globe.

These are some of the basic duties of a plant breeder.

Plant Breeding: The conventional Methods!

Plant breeding is the identification and selection of desirable traits of any two good species of plants and concentrating on the ways and techniques to combine them in making a new individual plant. The Mendel’s laws of Genetics have offered the scientific fundamentals of plant inheritance and it is now understood that chromosomes are the primary thing which is responsible for the manipulation and transformation of plant characteristics and traits from one generation to the other.

Broadly speaking, there are three main ways to manipulate the genes of plants and their chromosomal combination.

•    Selection
This is the primary and the most ancient type of selection which has become one of the most effective techniques of the breeding process. Firstly, many selections are made from the genetically original species. The selected and the inbred species of the plants are compared to existing commercial varieties that are there in their yielding performance and other significant factors.

•    Hybridisation
The very commonly used breeding technique is the hybridisation. It helps a great deal in plant promotions too! It can be very easily accomplished by self pollinating plants and then the outcome progeny is used for combination of desired characters. After the generation of the pure line, it is out crossed with another inbred line of plants. By following this procedure, the unfavourable traits or characters are removed by back crossing. Back crossing might be a little more time consuming as compared to the traditional crossing methods, but it has been proven to be quite an effective cure for eliminating the unwanted characters and traits. There are majorly two types of hybrid plants: inter specific and inter generic hybrid plants.

•    Polyploidy
Majority of the plants are diploid. But, there are some plants that are made with three or more pairs of chromosomes and thus they are known as polyploids. This increase in the number of chromosomes per cell can be artificially achieved by injecting the required chemicals that will ultimately result in the doubling of the chromosomal number. Mainly, polyploidy is carried out to increase the size and variability in terms of genes. On the other hand, it must be known that such plants are slow growers and have lower or decreased fertility.

Using these conventional breeder services and techniques has proved to be very much beneficial in the recent times for all the plant species and varieties. Following the above mentioned processes especially for food production is termed as ‘green revolution’. This included the social, economic and nutritional impact of the products.

How to care for potted plants

Want to have potted flowers and shrubs at home? Here are the steps...

1.    Choose the pots carefully:
Make sure there are more holes at the bottom of the pot that allow better flow of water. Not enough seepage of water will lead to the premature death of the plant as the roots tend to drown in excess water.

Almost all the type of containers make good pots, it depends on your style of preference and budget. If you use light weight containers, they will be easy to move from one place to another. Plant promotion experts will guide you perfectly in details on what fits best in what type of pots.

2.    Choose the potting mix wisely:
Never use soil from the garden or your yard. It s filled with many unwanted components like insects, weeds, algae or fungi. Instead, buy potting soil from your local garden store. It is generally lose and light mixture of materials that include peat moss, vermiculite, and decomposed organic matter.

To reduce expensive maintenance, buy a mix which contains a time release fertilizer and moisture retaining crystals. Contact your nearest plant promotion services for a better idea of the mix.

3.    Now, Choose the shrubs:
First make all the conditions of your available space. For example, if you buy and keep a rose at a porch which receives full sun only during the morning time for approximately an hour, your rose will die soon. This is because rose requires minimum 6 hours of direct sunlight.

Do a bit of research, read more about the requirements of various types of vegetation available and then decide upon which will suit best for your available space.
When buying, keep it simple and buy the same kinds for one pot. You cannot put a cactus and pansy in one pot and expect them to stay for long!

4.    Prepare the pots
If you have chosen a large pot, make sure it is prepared in the same location where you would want it to be after the filling of mix. Before pouring in the soil, check its moisture content. Read the directions written on the bag carefully. Fill the container with the soil. Never pack it too hard. If possible, take relevant tips and suggestions from the breeder services.

5.    Pot it:
Take it out from its nursery container. Set it on top of the mix. Carefully fill in small handfuls of soil and pat gently.
